Re-evaluating boron speciation in biogenic calcite and aragonite using 11B MAS NMR

چکیده
Understanding the partitioning of aqueous boron species into marine carbonates is critical for constraining the boron isotope system for use as a marine pH proxy. Previous studies have assumed that boron was incorporated into carbonate through the preferential uptake of tetrahedral borate B(OH)4 . In this study we revisit this assumption through a detailed solid state B magic angle spinning (MAS) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopic study of boron speciation in biogenic and hydrothermal carbonates. Our new results contrast with those of the only previous NMR study of carbonates insofar as we observe both trigonal and tetrahedral coordinated boron in almost equal abundances in our biogenic calcite and aragonite samples. In addition, we observe no strict dependency of boron coordination on carbonate crystal structure. These NMR observations coupled with our earlier re-evaluation of the magnitude of boron isotope fractionation between aqueous species suggest that controls on boron isotope composition in marine carbonates, and hence the pH proxy, are more complex that previously suggested. 2009 Elsevier Ltd. Red coralline algae assessed as marine pH proxies using 11B MAS NMR
Reconstructing pH from biogenic carbonates using boron isotopic compositions relies on the assumption that only borate, and no boric acid, is present. Red coralline algae are frequently used in palaeoenvironmental reconstruction due to their widespread distribution and regular banding frequency. Prior to undertaking pH reconstructions using red coralline algae we tested the boron composition of...
متن کاملAssessing the impact of diagenesis on 11B, 13C, 18O, Sr/Ca and B/Ca values in fossil planktic foraminiferal calcite
The geochemical composition of foraminiferal tests is a valuable archive for the reconstruction of paleo-climatic, -oceanographic and -ecological changes. However, dissolution of biogenic calcite and precipitation of inorganic calcite (overgrowth and recrystallization) at the seafloor and in the sediment column can potentially alter the original geochemical composition of the foraminiferal test...

Glasses and polycrystals in the series xNa2S + (1 − x)B2S3 have been prepared and studied by magic angle spinning (MAS) NMR and by two-dimensional multiple-quantum (MQ) MAS NMR of11B and 23Na. These techniques, when applied at various magnetic fields and combined with computer simulations of the spectra, provide new insights into the structure of the polycrystalline samples. Isotropic chemical ...
متن کاملAssignment of polarization-dependent peaks in carbon K-edge spectra from biogenic and geologic aragonite.
Many biominerals, including mollusk and echinoderm shells, avian eggshells, modern and fossil bacterial sediments, planktonic coccolithophores, and foraminifera, contain carbonates in the form of biogenic aragonite or calcite. Here we analyze biogenic and geologic aragonite using different kinds of surface- and bulk-sensitive X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy at the carb...
متن کاملBoron Sites in Borosilicate Zeolites at Various Stages of Hydration Studied by Solid State NMR Spectroscopy
Borosilicate zeolites have recently been studied in many aspects because they are useful in substitution of framework metal ions (to Al or Ga) and in catalyzing chemical reactions that use relatively weak acid strength. Boron shows a great extent of flexibility in coordination conversion between trigonal boron, B[3], and tetrahedral boron, B[4]. Such conversion takes place in the framework of b...
